Cal Loses Slugfest at Cal Poly, 16-8

Bears next host Utah in Pac-12 series.

SAN LUIS OBISPO, CALIF. - In a slugfest for the final game of a four-game series, Cal lost, 16-8, to No. 5 Cal Poly Monday (March 25) at Baggett Stadium in San Luis Obispo. Junior second baseman Brenden Farney led the Golden Bears at the plate, going 2-for-4 with a double and four RBI. Junior third baseman Chris Paul was 3-for-5 with a triple and RBI, while sophomore center fielder Devin Pearson tripled as well.

Cal (11-12) ended up going 1-3 against the highly-ranked Mustangs. The Bears lost the opener, 4-1, came back to win the second game, 8-3, before falling, 8-4, Sunday and, 16-8, Monday.

In Monday's contest, Cal scored two runs in the first inning on Farney's two-run single to right field. Cal Poly came right back with two runs in the bottom of the first inning off of Bear freshman right-hander Alex Martinez (1.0 inning, eight hits, eight runs).

Cal then jumped out to a 8-2 lead by scoring six runs in the top of the third inning, highlighted by Pearson's two-run triple right center field, Farney's two-run double to left center field and Paul's RBI triple to right center field.

But, the Bears pitching struggled in the bottom of the third as the Mustangs exploded for 13 runs on nine hits off of three Cal pitchers. The only other run of the game was a sacrifice fly by Cal Poly in the seventh inning. The Bears finished with 10 hits on the day.

Cal next returns to Pac-12 play with a three-game series versus Utah, March 28-30 at Evans Diamond, followed by a non-conference game versus Stanford on April 1 at 7 p.m. at Evans Diamond.
