BERKELEY - Led by the pitching of juniors Michael Theofanopoulos and Keaton Siomkin - and the hitting of junior second baseman Brenden Farney - Cal baseball captured the second game of a doubleheader versus Arkansas, 2-1, Sunday (March 9) at Evans Diamond.

Theofanopoulos went 6.0 innings with seven hits, no runs, two walks and four strikeouts, while Siomkin earned the win in relief, pitching the final 2.0 innings. Farney went 3-for-3 with a double and scored the Bears' first run.

After Brett McAfee tied the game in the eighth inning with a sacrifice fly, scoring Tyler Spoon who had led off the inning with a double, Farney led off the bottom of the eighth with a single. Brian Celsi pinch ran for Farney and ended up scoring what turned out to be the winning run with Clark Eagan's throw hit Celsi in the back of the helmet when he was trying to score from third base.

With the win, the Golden Bears improved to 10-5 overall and won their final two games of the Cal Baseball Classic. On Friday, Cal had fallen to Tulane, 10-5, and on Saturday the Bears lost 1-0 to San Francisco.

In the first game of the doubleheader versus the No. 24-ranked Razorbacks Sunday, Cal won 4-3.

"After losing a couple of tough games, we were able to defeat a quality SEC team," said Cal coach David Esquer. "Our guys want to be a top team and we challenged them after yesterday's loss to USF. We are proud of the fact they were able to come back and play two good games today."

The Bears will next open Pac-12 play hosting defending national champion UCLA, March 14-16, at Evans Diamond. Game times are 7 p.m. Friday, 6 p.m. Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday in a contest televised by the Pac-12 Networks.
