BERKELEY – Cal fans can get their first look at the 2014 volleyball team at the annual Blue & Gold Scrimmage on Aug. 23 at 5 p.m. at Haas Pavilion. Admission is free.
The scrimmage follows Golden Bear Day presented by Bug Zappers Pest Control, which takes place from 2-4 p.m. at Lisa and Douglas Goldman Plaza on the concourse level of California Memorial Stadium.
The Bears return three starters and a libero from last year’s team that went 18-13 and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Leading the way is senior opposite hitter Christina Higgins, who was a Second Team All-American in 2013. Libero Maddy Kerr also returns after being named to the Pac-12 All-Freshman Team last season.
Cal also welcomes back starting middle blockers Lara Vukasovic and Lillian Schonewise. Vukasovic was one of only five players to rank in the top-10 in hitting percentage and blocks in the Pac-12 last season. Schonewise, meanwhile, was the Bears’ leading hitter during Cal’s European Tour in the spring.
The Bears also feature the No. 9 recruiting class in the country according to PrepVolleyball.com. Outside hitter Ashten Smith-Gooden was a Under Armour First Team All-American and the No. 5 Senior Ace by PrepVolleyball.com. Fellow outside hitter Christine Alftin was an Under Armour Second Team All-American and the No. 51 Senior Ace, while middle blocker Laura Leap ranked No. 94 on the PrepVolleyball.com Senior Ace list.
Cal opens the season Aug. 29 at the Air Force Tournament against Southern Illinois-Edwardsville.
