BERKELEY – Cal senior opposite hitter Christina Higgins has been named to the Preseason All-Pac-12 Team, the conference office announced Wednesday.
Higgins, an AVCA Second Team All-American last season, was one of 15 players named to the team, which was determined by a vote of Pac-12 head coaches.
Higgins, who was also an All-Pac-12 honorable mention selection last season, set career-highs in 2013 by averaging 3.52 kills per set and hitting for a .292 percentage. Her kill average ranked ninth in the conference and was second among opposite hitters.
The Pac-12 introduced a preseason all-conference team last season for the first time and this marks the second year in a row the Bears have been represented. Last season, outside hitter Adrienne Gehan earned the honor.
The Bears, who went 18-13 last season and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament, open the 2014 season on Aug. 29 against Southern Illinois-Edwardsville in the Air Force Tournament. Along with Higgins, Cal returns starting middle blockers Lara Vukasovic and Lillian Schonewise as well as libero Maddy Kerr, who was a member of the 2013 Pac-12 All-Freshman Team. The Bears also have the No. 9 recruiting class in the nation according to PrepVolleyball.com.
