HIDALGO, Mexico – Former Cal All-American Carli Lloyd started at setter and contributed five points and three blocks as the United States National Team defeated Colombia 25-19, 25-19, 30-28 on Wednesday on the opening day of the Pan-American Cup.
Lloyd, who was named the National Player of the Year as a senior at Cal in 2010, helped run an offense that hit for a blistering .489 percentage to dominate the match. Lloyd’s work on the block also contributed to a suffocating American defense at the net, as the United States out-blocked Colombia, 16-4.
This is Lloyd’s third appearance in the Pan-Am Cup, having helped the U.S. win the bronze medal in 2011 and gold medal in 2012. At Cal, Lloyd led the Bears to two Final Four appearances, one as a freshman and one as a senior.
Pool play continues Thursday for the Americans against Argentina.
