BERKELEY – The Cal volleyball program has added Carson Lowden as a volunteer assistant coach, head coach Rich Feller announced.
Lowden, a former All-Big West setter at UC Davis, has spent the past three seasons as an assistant coach at Chico State.
“The career move for her is really a great move and for us it’s really incredible,” Feller said. “We get a really experienced college coach who has not been out of the college playing ranks very long. She has a great work ethic and can teach the game. I’m really excited.”
Lowden played at UC Davis from 2006-09, serving as team captain her junior and senior seasons. She was a three-time Big West All-Academic Team selection and was the Big West Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year as a senior.
Before her stint at Chico State, Lowden served as an assistant for one season at Butte College. She has also worked Cal’s summer camps the past two seasons.
“Carson has gotten to know us better and better the last several years,” Feller said. “I love what she does on the court with camp kids. The players already know her and love her for working camps with her the last three years. It’s a good fit for her and we’re very excited to have someone of that experience coming in and being a volunteer.”
The Bears opened the spring tournament last weekend at Pacific and will play at a tourney at Sacramento State on Saturday.
Later this spring, the Bears are taking an international trip to Switzerland, Italy, Slovenia and Croatia. Under NCAA rules, teams are permitted to take a foreign tour once every four years. This will be the first international trip the program has taken during Feller's 15 years at the helm.
The Bears will leave the Bay Area on May 24 and return June 7, and play various club and nationally sponsored teams. The trip is being paid for exclusively through fundraising efforts.
