BERKELEY – Cal sophomores-to-be Alyssa Jensen and Maddy Kerr are participating in this weekend’s open tryouts for the U.S. Women’s National Team and U.S. Collegiate National Team programs at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo.
A projected record 247 athletes from 107 different colleges are expected to be on hand for the three-day event in which four teams of 12 will be selected for the U.S. Collegiate National Team program. One team will travel to China on June 13-27 for a series of training sessions and matches in conjunction with a Pac-12 All-Star Team. Three other squads will be chosen to participate in the USA Volleyball Girls’ Junior National Championships at the end of June in Minneapolis.
“Anytime we can put our players in competitive situations with other players that are deemed to be the best at their positions, it’s a good thing,” Cal coach Rich Feller said. “The more competitive, the better. They get to play against the best college players at their positions in a tryout situation. You can’t really replicate that in your own practice gym. It’s good for them, whether they make the team or not.”
Kerr, a libero from San Diego, was named to the Pac-12 All-Freshman Team after last season when she registered 430 digs, the ninth-best single-season mark ever at Cal. She also tied a school record with 33 digs in a win over Oregon.
Jensen, a setter from Fenton, MO, was a member of the Pac-12 All-Star Team that toured China last summer and is Cal’s projected starting setter in 2014.
The tryouts will be streamed live here, beginning Friday at 1 p.m. PT. The tryouts conclude Sunday morning.
