Gehan Named to All-Pac-12 Team

Caloiaro, Higgins Earn Honorable Mention
By Cal Athletics on Tue, December 03, 2013

BERKELEY – Cal senior outside hitter Adrienne Gehan was named to the All-Pac-12 Team on Tuesday.

Senior setter Joan Caloiaro and junior opposite hitter Christina Higgins each earned honorable mention, while libero Maddy Kerr was named to the Pac-12 All-Freshman team.

Gehan was a member of the Pac-12 All-Freshman Team in 2010 and was on the 2013 Preseason All-Pac-12 Team. She ranks sixth in the conference with 4.11 kills per set, a number that was driven down in her final matches of the regular season as she saw just limited playing time because of injury. Gehan also averages 3.02 digs per set and leads the Bears with 23 service aces. Gehan also is one of the Bears’ primary passers on offense.

This marks the 12th year in a row the Bears have placed at least one player on the All-Pac-12 Team.

Caloiaro spent much of the season as the Pac-12 leader in assist average until a rash of injuries late in the season slowed down Cal’s offense. She still ranks second in the conference with 11.66 assists per set and leads an offense that is fifth in the Pac-12 with a .245 hitting percentage.

Higgins ranks ninth in the Pac-12 with 3.52 kills per set and has an impressive .292 hitting percentage for the season. Higgins has been especially impressive down the stretch as she has had to play on both the left and right sides because of injuries. During the final four matches of the regular season, Higgins averaged 4.78 kills per set at a .306 hitting percentage.

It is the first All-Pac-12 honor for all three players.

Kerr ranks ninth in the Pac-12 with 3.73 digs per set and tied a school record with 33 digs against Oregon on Oct. 2.

Washington outside hitter Krista Vansant was named the Pac-12 Player of the Year, USC’s Ebony Nwanebu is the Pac-12 Freshman of the Year and Washington’s Jim McLaughlin was tabbed as the Pac-12 Coach of the Year.

Stanford’s Madi Bugg was selected as the Pac-12 Setter of the Year and USC’s Natalie Hagglund was picked as the Pac-12 Libero of the Year.

Cal (17-12) opens play in the NCAA Tournament on Friday in Madison, Wisc. against North Carolina at 3 p.m. PT.
