The Bears return both of their starting outside hitters from 2012, including leading attacker Adrienne Gehan, a senior who averaged a team-best 3.10 kills per set last season. Junior Christina Higgins tied for second on the team with 2.76 kills per set last year.
Setter Joan Caloiaro also returns for her senior season after ranking fourth in the Pac-12 with 10.4 assists per set last year. Sophomore opposite hitter Lara Vukasovic is also back after starting 14 matches in 2012.
The Blue & Gold Scrimmage also will be fans’ first chance to see the members of Cal’s 2013 recruiting class, which ranked No. 21 in the country by Prepvolleyball.com. Setter Alyssa Jensen, who recently toured China with a team of Pac-12 All-Stars, comes to Cal after earning Under Armour First Team All-American honors. She was the No. 35 Senior Ace by Prepvolleyball.com and a Volleyball Magazine “Fab 50” selection.
Middle blocker Jenelle Jordan was Prepvolleyball.com’s No. 17 Senior Ace and also was an Under Armour All-American as well as a Fab 50 pick. Libero Maddy Kerr was another Fab 50 choice by Volleyball Magazine and the No. 65 Senior Ace by Prepvolleyball.com.
The Bears open the 2013 season on Aug. 30 against Nevada in the Cal Molten Classic at Haas Pavilion.
The Blue & Gold Scrimmage takes place after Golden Bear Day presented by Bug Zappers Pest Control, which will be held from 2-4 p.m. at the Lisa and Douglas Goldman Plaza at Memorial Stadium. More than 200 student-athletes from a variety of Cal athletic programs, including Cal’s entire volleyball team, will be present. The event will feature food, merchandise and children’s activities.
