BERKELEY -

University of California gymnasts celebrated their breakthrough season at the team banquet Saturday evening at California Memorial Stadium.

Junior Alicia Asturias was named the team's "Most Valuable Player" for both her performance and leadership this season. Asturias competed in the all-around in every meet of the 2013 season, posting new career-high totals in every event. Her 9.95 total on the vault is tied for the highest vault score in program history, and she was also named to the All-Pac-12 Second Team for her performance at the Pac-12 Championships in March. Outside of the gym, Asturias is a disciplined student with a 3.78 GPA in psychology, which garnered her Pac-12 All-Academic First Team honors.

Freshman Jordan Widener and sophomore Crystal Paz shared the "Most Improved" award for their growth in skills and performances. Both Widener and Paz proved their grit and tenacity in crucial situations throughout the season. An anchor on both beam and floor, Paz set new career highs on both events and her 9.875 balance beam total ties for the fourth-highest score in program history. Widener was one of the team's leading bars performers with a 9.825 personal best.

"Most Inspirational" went to Carol Chang, who came out of medical retirement after numerous knee surgeries to become one of the team's most consistent performers. She set new career-high totals in beam and floor with a 9.775 and 9.8, respectively.

Cal finished its best season in recent history with a trip to the NCAA Gymnastics Championship Corvallis Regional in Corvallis, Ore. for its first team regional bid since 2007. The team jumped 21 spots in the final national rankings from No. 49 in 2012 to No. 28 in 2013 following a slew of high-scoring performances that included the second-highest score in program history, a 196.525 in the regular season finale.
