BERKELEY - University of California women's gymnastics head coach Justin Howell picked up his second coaching award of the season as he was named the National Association of Collegiate Gymnastics Coaches' (NACGC) West Region Coach of the Year Wednesday.

Peers acknowledged Howell for his tremendous role in Cal's rise from a No. 49 ranking with a 192.608 average this time last year to a No. 32 ranking, 194.982 average and NCAA Regional Berth this year. The team finished the regular season with a 196.525, the second-highest score in program history and highest score since 2007.

Howell was also named the Pac-12 Gymnastics Coach of the Year for his success as a first-year head coach for the Golden Bears.

Cal advances to the 2013 NCAA Gymnastics Championship's Corvallis Regional, set for 4 p.m. April 6 at Gill Coliseum in Corvallis, Ore. The Golden Bears will compete against No. 4 Georgia, No. 10 Oregon State, No. 16 Arkansas, No. 21 Boise State and No. 28 Arizona State for a spot in the NCAA Gymnastics Championship. The two teams with the highest totals advance to the championship, held April 19-21 in Los Angeles.
