BERKELEY – California women’s tennis will play in up to six tournaments – including the season-opening Cal Nike Fall Invitational – in the fall portion of the 2014-15 season, head coach Amanda Augustus announced. The Golden Bears are coming off of a Pac-12 championship and a trip to the NCAA round of 16 in the 2013-14 season, while All-American Lynn Chi capped the year with an amazing run to the NCAA singles final.
Cal will host its annual Nike Fall Invitational at both the Hellman Tennis Complex and the Channing Tennis Courts from Sept. 26-28. In last year’s tournament, the Bears won three titles, including then-junior Zsofi Susanyi capturing the top singles crown.
Augustus – the 2014 Pac-12 Coach of the Year – will lead her squad into the 2014 ITA Women’s All-American Championships in Los Angeles from Sept. 30-Oct. 5, before the Bears participate in the USTA/ITA Northwest Regional Championships at Stanford from Oct. 10-14. Susanyi reached the semifinals in both singles and – with Denise Starr – doubles at last year’s regional.
Next, they make the short trek to Moraga, Calif., to take part in the Saint Mary’s Invitational from Oct. 24-26.
The USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships are slated to take place from Nov. 6-9 and will overlap the Nov. 7-9 Arizona State Thunderbird Invitational. The Tempe, Ariz., tournament signals the end of the fall competitions for the Bears.
Last year, Susanyi earned an at-large berth to play in the indoor intercollegiate in Flushing, N.Y., while the ASU Thunderbird Invitational singles final featured then-freshmen Starr and Maegan Manasse, with Starr defeating her fellow Bear for the title.
Cal will unveil the spring portion of its schedule in January.
