BERKELEY - Maegan Manasse’s court-five singles win clinched No. 13 California’s 7-0 rout of No. 19 Arizona State on Friday at the Hellman Tennis Complex. The Golden Bear freshman – ranked 78th in the nation – beat Ebony Panoho to give Cal a 4-0 lead that eventually wound up at 7-0, as the teams played out the final matches.

The Bears improved their record to 11-4 (4-0 in the Pac-12), while ASU, which dropped its first conference match, now stands at 16-3 (3-1 Pac-12).

Manasse has scored the winning point in a team-high five of Cal’s 11 dual-match victories. The first team to score four points wins a college dual match, so she won the singles match that gave Cal four points in five contests.

“It feels nice,” Manasse said of Friday’s clincher. “I didn’t even realize it until someone said, ‘You clinched again.’ It feels good, and everyone played really well, so it was a great win for us today.”

She battled Panoho before claiming a 7-5 first-set win. The Golden Bear trailed in the second set at 1-0 before winning six straight games, capturing the set at 6-1 and taking the match.

“In the second set I just stepped off the baseline a little bit and gave myself more time because she was just hitting the ball really well, and she was serving really well,” Manasse said. “But once I stepped off the baseline a little bit and got a couple more balls on the court, it was a lot easier for me to set up the points and finish the match.”

Cal quickly captured the doubles point when Manasse and fellow freshman Denise Starr defeated Leighann Sahagun/Kassidy Jump, 8-1, on court two and then senior Kelly Chui and sophomore Klara Fabikova beat ASU’s Joanna Smith/Stephanie Vlad, 8-2. The teams played out the match on court one, on which the Sun Devils’ Desirae Krawcyzk/Alexandra Osborne upset Cal’s 60th-ranked team of sophomore Lynn Chi and senior Anett Schutting, 6-5(2).

Fabikova bolted out to a 6-2, 6-0 win in singles over Leighann Sahagun on court four to double Cal’s lead to 2-0. Starr, ranked 29th in singles, followed with an impressive 6-2, 6-1 victory over the 60th-ranked Vlad on court one to give Cal a 3-0 lead.

Manasse then finished on court five just before teammates Schutting – who was playing No. 81 Krawcyzk on court two – and senior Alice Duranteau – who was playing Joanna Smith on court six – completed their matches. Schutting then won, 6-1, 6-4, and Duranteau triumphed, 6-2, 5-7 1-0(8), to give Cal a 6-0 lead.

Cal junior Zsofi Susanyi and ASU’s Jump played in the last match to end. A lengthy first set – which ended right after Manasse won in two sets – ended with Susanyi on top, 7-6(3). The 14th-ranked Susanyi wrapped up the second set, 6-4, to make the final score 7-0.

Cal returns to Hellman at noon on Saturday to host No. 29 Arizona (14-2, 3-1 Pac-12).
