BERKELEY – California’s Zsofi Susanyi and Klara Fabikova claimed all-tournament honors after leading the then-No. 8 Golden Bears to the semifinals of the recent ITA National Women’s Team Indoor Championships, the ITA announced on Friday. Cal – now ranked No. 4 in the ITA poll – came away from the tournament with 5-1 overall record.
The voters of the all-tournament team are composed of the head coaches of all 16 participating teams.
Each Bear went unbeaten in singles, winning three matches apiece, as Cal defeated No. 13 Clemson on Feb. 7 and No. 6 Georgia on Feb. 8 before falling to No. 10 – and eventual champion – Duke in the semis on Feb. 9 at the Boar’s Head Tennis Club in Charlottesville, Va. Playing at No. 4 singles, Susanyi knocked off Clemson’s Ani Miao, 6-2, 6-4, Georgia’s Lilly Kimbell, 6-0, 6-4, and Duke’s Alyssa Smith, 6-2, 7-5. Fabikova, playing at No. 5 singles, beat Clemson’s 103rd-ranked Tristen Dewar, 6-2, 6-2, Georgia’s Kate Fuller, 7-5, 7-5, and Duke’s Rachel Kahan, 4-6, 6-3, 1-0(3).
Last week, Susanyi (14-6 record) held a No. 16 singles ranking, which the Cal junior held onto in the Feb. 11 poll. Fabikova (17-5) moved back into the ITA rankings this week; the sophomore is now ranked No. 84.
The Bears next take on UCLA on Feb. 21 and USC on Feb. 22 in Los Angeles.
