BERKELEY – Coming off of a strong fall semester, California claimed a No. 8 team ranking in the first ITA national poll of the New Year. Cal is one of nine Pac-12 Conference teams ranked in the ITA poll. The Golden Bears are also one of four teams ranked in the top 10. Cal also claimed five singles rankings and two doubles rankings from the ITA.
The Bears ranked in singles are 15th-ranked freshman Denise Starr, who posted an 8-1 singles record in the fall, 16th-ranked junior Zsofi Susanyi (10-4), 26th-ranked senior Anett Schutting (9-5), 31st-ranked freshman Maegan Manasse (7-2) and 95th-ranked sophomore Lynn Chi (9-5).
The doubles team of Susanyi and sophomore Klara Fabikova (4-2) – which won the top doubles title at the Cal Nike Invitational in September – earned a No. 18 ranking from the ITA, while the pair of Susanyi and Starr (3-1) claimed a No. 48 ranking. The duo of Susanyi and Starr reached the doubles semifinals of the USTA/ITA Northwest Regional Championships late in the fall.
The Bears ended the fall with runs in the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships and the ASU Thunderbird Invitational. In the latter tournament, Starr defeated teammate Manasse, 6-1, 6-2, for the main draw singles title. Fabikova also reached the singles semifinals in Tempe, Ariz., and wound up taking fourth place. In New York, Susanyi ended her fall in the consolation draw’s round of 16.
The Bears open the spring semester when they host the Cal Winter Invitational from Jan. 17-19.
