BERKELEY – Four California Golden Bears – Gregory Bayane, Nikhil Jayashankar, Wyatt Houghton and Jack Sanford – claimed ITA Scholar-Athlete status for the second straight year, the governing body of collegiate tennis announced on Thursday.
This also marks the third consecutive ITA Scholar-Athlete honor for Bayane, who will be a senior in the fall. Jayashankar, also a rising senior, has likewise earned three ITA Scholar-Athlete accolades, including the honor he picked up after his freshman year at Northwestern.
In order to earn ITA Scholar-Athlete status a player must meet the following criteria: 1.) be a varsity letter winner, 2.) have a grade point average of at least 3.50 (on a 4.00 scale) for the current academic year, and 3.) have been enrolled at their present school for at least two semesters (including freshman through senior year).
This is the second set of academic kudos for Bayane and Jayashankar for 2013-14; Bayane, an economics major, earned a spot on the Pac-12 All-Academic first team and Jayashankar claimed a spot on the Pac-12 All-Academic second team.
It has been a career year for Bayane, who reached the NCAA doubles quarterfinals with Chase Melton, earned doubles All-America honors and with Melton ended the season with a No. 19 ITA ranking.
