BERKELEY – Four California Golden Bears earned spots on the Pac-12 Men’s Tennis All-Academic Teams, the conference announced Thursday. Junior Gregory Bayane led the way with a berth on the first team.
An economics major, Bayane posted a 3.68 grade-point average to claim a first-team spot for the second consecutive year. Nikhil Jayashankar, another junior economics major, is on the second team with a 3.56 GPA. While this marks the first conference academic award for Jayashankar, last year Bayane and Jayashankar both earned ITA Scholar Athlete honors.
Senior Ben McLachlan, who on Wednesday garnered an All-Pac-12 first-team berth, and sophomore Mads Engsted collected Pac-12 All-Academic Honorable Mention. This is the second straight honorable mention for McLachlan, who achieved Pac-12 All-Academic second-team status in 2012 and also earned ITA Scholar Athlete status with Bayane in 2012. This is Engsted’s first conference academic honor.
To be eligible for selection to the academic team, a student-athlete must have a minimum 3.0 overall grade-point and be a significant contributor.
