ATHENS, Ga. – California’s 55th-ranked Ben McLachlan defeated Illinois’ eighth-seeded and eighth-ranked Jared Hiltzik, 7-5, 4-6, 6-3, in the NCAA Singles Championship opening round of 64 on Wednesday at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex.

McLachlan, a senior, next plays the winner of the first-round match between Denver’s 106th-ranked Henry Craig and Oklahoma’s 53rd-ranked Andrew Harris in the round of 32 on Thursday at a time TBA.

“Ben did an outstanding job of being patient and looking for opportunities,” Cal head coach Peter Wright said. “Hiltzik has been tough for everyone in the country to beat this year, and he really made Ben work physically and mentally today. That’s a great way for Ben to start the tournament.”

On Thursday at 11:30 a.m. PT/2:30 p.m. ET, Cal’s 28th-ranked pair of juniors Gregory Bayane and Chase Melton opens the NCAA Doubles Championship against Alabama’s Nos. 5-8-seeded and seventh-ranked Becker O’Shaughnessey/Daniil Proskura.
