OJAI, Calif. – Fourth-seeded California completed a season sweep of fifth-seeded Utah when the 19th-ranked Golden Bears blanked the 57th-ranked Utes, 4-0, on Thursday in the second round of the Pac-12 Championships at Libbey Park. Cal advances to play top-seeded and top-ranked USC on Friday at noon.

Cal beat Utah during the regular season, 4-2, on March 30 in Salt Lake City.

At Pac-12s, the Bears captured the doubles points with wins on courts one and two. Cal’s No. 1 doubles team of juniors Gregory Bayane and Chase Melton – ranked 23rd in this week’s ITA poll – beat the Utah pair of Slim Hamza/Cedric Willems, 8-3, on court one. The 85th-ranked tandem of freshman Andre Goransson and senior Ben McLachlan secured the point with an 8-5 victory over Ben Tasevac/Devin Lane on two. The court-three match featuring freshman Filip Bergevi and sophomore Mads Engsted battling the Utes’ Matt Cowley/Alejandro Medinilla was abandoned, with the Bears leading 6-3.

Senior Campbell Johnson collected the first singles win, beating Tasevac, 6-3, 6-1, on court two to give Cal a 2-0 overall lead. Senior and 61st-ranked Ben McLachlan followed with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over the 84th-ranked Hamza on court one. Freshman Andre Goransson clinched and ended the overall match with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Willems on court four.

The remaining matches were abandoned.

With a berth to the final in the balance on Friday, Cal faces a Trojan team that beat the Bears, 4-0, on April 5 in Los Angeles. The Bears have won three of their last four matches heading into the semis.
