TUCSON, Ariz. – Filip Bergevi clinched the doubles point and later secured the overall match with his court-three singles victory as No. 16 California shut out host Arizona, 4-0, in the Golden Bears’ Pac-12 opener on Friday at the LaNelle Robson Tennis Center.

Cal improved its record to 11-3 (1-0 in the Pac-12) after winning its third straight dual match. Arizona’s record is now 11-8 (0-1 Pac-12).

Bergevi, a freshman, teamed up with sophomore Mads Engsted to clinch doubles with an 8-5 win over Will Kneale/Trevor James on court three. Juniors Gregory Bayane and Chase Melton – ranked 14th nationally – gave Cal its first doubles victory with an 8-3 result against the Wildcats’ Naoki Takeda/Sumeet Shinde.

The Bears did not lose a set in singles, as Bayane started things off with a 6-4, 6-2 win over James on court five and then Engsted beat Robin Chou, 6-3, 6-3, on court six to make the score 3-0. Bergevi beat Mario Urquidi, 6-3, 7-5, to hand the Bears the match.

“Our guys did an excellent job today of handling themselves in this match,” Cal head coach Peter Wright said. “We were prepared for the challenges of playing in Tucson, and we stuck to our game plan. We did a much better job today of coming out focused after winning the doubles point.”

Cal continues its road trip when it plays a conference match at Utah on Sunday at 10 a.m. PT
