BERKELEY – Ben McLachlan – ranked 84th in singles – toppled 54th-ranked Nick Chappell in three sets to clinch 20th-ranked California’s 4-3 win over No. 43 TCU on Tuesday afternoon at the Channing Tennis Courts.

The Golden Bears (8-2) had a 1-0 lead after winning in doubles and, along with McLahlan’s triumph, collected a clutch three-set win from Nikhil Jayashankar and a win from Gregory Bayane to beat the Horned Frogs (7-5).

In front of a small but boisterous crowd at Channing, McLachlan held on to win two tiebreakers and ultimately prevail 7-6(9), 3-6 , 7-6(3).

“I was serving well at the end, and I just trusted in my serve,” McLachlan said. “I had a lot of confidence serving up 6-3 in the tiebreaker.”

Of the fans and his teammates' cheers he added, "It pumped me up. I love all the guys getting behind me."

McLachlan won twice on the day, as the senior paired with sophomore Mads Engsted to blank the TCU team of Arnaud Dachs/Trey Daniel, 8-0, on court two in doubles. Cal secured the doubles point when juniors Gregory Bayane and Chase Melton followed with an 8-3 upset of No. 13 Nick Chappell/Will Stein on court two. The court-three match was abandoned.

Bayane beat Daniel on court five in singles, 6-1, 6-1, to give Cal a 2- 0 overall lead.

But the Horned Frogs ran off three straight wins to take a 3-2 lead. First, Rodolfo Bustamante topped Cal sophomore and 113th-ranked Andre Goransson, 6-3, 6-2, on court four, then No. 109 Dachs beat No. 117 Bergevi, 6-4, 6-4, on court three and finally No. 99 Facundo Lugones defeated No. 81 Campbell Johnson on court two, 7-6(1), 6-4.

Jayashankar, a late addition to today’s singles lineup, held off Jhonathan Gonzalez on court six to win, 7-5, 3-6, 6-4, tie the overall match at 3-3 and set up McLachlan to clinch the Bears’ victory.

Cal next competes in the Oracle Collegiate Tennis Challenge this weekend in Indian Wells, Calif. The Bears play No. 12 Baylor at 9 a.m. on Saturday and then play No. 31 Tulsa at noon on Sunday at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden.
