No. 9 Cal Plays No. 39 Stanford on the Farm

BERKELEY – Ninth-ranked California – back in the ITA’s top 10 for the first time in two years – heads down to No. 39 Stanford on Saturday for one of two matches with the Cardinal this season. The rivals clash at 1 p.m. at the Taube Family Tennis Center in a nonconference match.

The Golden Bears (6-2) and Stanford (3-1) play their annual Pac-12 Conference match in the regular-season finale for both teams on April 19 in Berkeley.

Poll Position

The time the ITA poll ranked Cal in the top 10 was on Feb. 22, 2012, when the Bears were No. 10. This year’s latest poll came out on Tuesday; the previous poll, on Feb. 4, ranked Cal 11th. The Bears ended the 2012-13 season ranked No. 17.

The ITA released its most recent set of 2013-14 singles and doubles rankings on Feb. 11 and will release its next set of singles and doubles rankings on Feb. 25.

Scouting the Bears

  • The lone common opponent between the two rivals so far this year is Hawaii, which Cal beat 4-0, on Jan. 30 at home;  Stanford beat Hawaii, 7-0, on Jan. 29 at home
  • Cal’s No. 1 singles player – senior Ben McLachlan – is tied for 62nd in the ITA singles poll and has compiled a 2-4 singles record
  • Senior Campbell Johnson is ranked No. 68 in the ITA singles poll and has compiled a 14-6 singles record
  • Freshman Andre Goransson is ranked No. 118 in the ITA poll
  • Goransson, the brother of former Cal women’s player Annie Goransson, has a 16-4 singles record
  • Junior Gregory Bayane earned the Pac-12 Player of the Week honor on Jan. 28 after winning two singles and two doubles matches when Cal played in the ITA Kick-Off Weekend at Pepperdine
  • Two proud Cal alumni lead the Golden Bears: Peter Wright (class of ’91) is in his 21st year as head coach, while associate head coach Tyler Browne (class of 2008) is in his sixth year on the staff

Last Time

Eighth-seeded California opened its Feb. 16 match with 13th-seeded Texas at the ITA National Men’s Team Indoor Championships by capturing the doubles point and then taking a 2-0 lead with a win in singles. But the 11th-ranked Golden Bears ultimately fell, 4-2, to the 10th-ranked Longhorns in the consolation bracket at the Downtown Club at the Met.

Cal (6-2) ended its run at ITA indoors with the loss to Texas (9-2).

The Bears’ pair of senior Ben McLachlan and freshman Andre Goransson beat Soren Hess-Olesen Lloyd Glasspool, 6-3, on court one to open doubles. 2: Cal juniors Gregory Bayane and Chase Melton then clinched the doubles point with a 6-5(1) victory over Nick Naumann/George Goldhoff.

Freshman Filip Bergevi gave Cal a 2-0 lead with his 6-2, 6-2 court-three win over George Goldhoff.

McLachlan, ranked 62nd in singles, lost to the 53rd-ranked Hess-Olsesen, 6-2, 6-3, on court one, 68th-ranked senior Campbell Johnson lost to the 29th-ranked Glasspool, 6-2, 6-3, on court two, No. 118 Goransson lost to Adrien Berkowicz, 6-4, 6-5(3) and, to end the match, Bayane fell to Naumann, 6-5(3), 6-4 on court five. The court-six match between Cal sophomore Mads Engsted and the Longhorns’ David Holiner was abandoned in the third set.

Scouting the Cardinal

  • Stanford’s last two matches – vs. USC on Feb. 7 and vs. UCLA on Feb. 9, both at home – were cancelled due to rain
  • The Cardinal were tied with the Bruins, 1-1, when the match was called; the USC match hadn’t started yet
  • Sophomore Maciek Romanowicz is ranked No. 48 in the ITA singles poll
  • Sophomore Nolan Paige was the 2013 ITA Northwest Region Rookie of the Year
  • John Whitlinger is in his 10th year as Stanford’s head coach

Next Time

Cal plays UNLV on Feb. 27 in San Diego as well as in the Pacific Coast Doubles Championships from Feb. 27-March 2 in La Jolla, Calif.
