Bears Fall at National Indoor Intercollegiate

Johnson Loses in the Round of 16, While Bayane/Melton Fall in the Doubles Back Draw

FLUSHING MEADOWS, N.Y. – California bowed out of the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships on Friday, as Campbell Johnson lost in main draw singles and the pair of Gregory Bayane and Chase Melton fell in the doubles back draw at the USTA Billie Jean National King Tennis Center.

Johnson, a senior ranked 41st in the ITA preseason poll, fell in his round of 16 match to Illinois’ eighth-seeded and 17th-ranked Jared Hiltzik, 6-3, 6-0.

Melton and Bayane played the second-seeded and 32nd-ranked Ohio State duo of Peter Kobelt and Kevin Metka, and the Bears fell, 8-5.
