Hutchinson, Kan. – Cal (279-289 – 568, +8) sits in 16th place at the NCAA Division I Men’s Golf Championship following the conclusion of second-round action Sunday afternoon at the par-70, 6,941-yard Prairie Dunes Country Club. The Golden Bears are scheduled to begin their third and final round of the 54-hole team stroke play of the tournament Sunday afternoon with a shotgun start at 4:40 p.m. CT.
Cal will play in the first wave of the third round for teams in positions 16-30 on the leaderboard (plus the three highest individuals not on those teams) at the end of two rounds. The first 15 teams on the leaderboard will play in the second wave scheduled to begin mid-morning on Monday.
There will be a limited but yet unspecified amount of time to complete the first wave of the third round (teams 16-30). If play is unable to be completed in that window expected to be mid-morning Monday, all scores in that round for the 15 teams in that wave will be declared null and void. In such a case, round three will be repaired to include only teams 1-15 and the six low individuals not on those teams (based on non-sudden death tie breaking procedures) to determine the eight teams for match play and the individual champion.
Cal finished second-round action a single stroke out of the top 15 and will head into the third round five shots out of a coveted top eight position that would move the Bears on to match play for the third straight season. Match-play quarterfinals and semifinals are scheduled for Tuesday with the championship match slated for Wednesday.
Cal completed its second round just before darkness Saturday but was one of only six teams in the 30-team field to do so. The Bears had to wait until the end of the second round Sunday before learning when they would play their third round.
A fourth round of stroke-play competition originally scheduled for Monday with the low 40 individuals and ties following three rounds to determine the individual medalist was cancelled. The individual medalist will now be determined by scores after 54 holes.
Brandon Hagy (68-72 – 140, E) is Cal’s top individual on the leaderboard at the start of third-round action tied for 26th place. JoëlStalter (69-73 – 142, +2) is tied for 50th, while Michael Weaver (72-71 – 143, +3) is tied for 63rd, Shotaro Ban (70-74 – 144, +4) tied for 75th, and Pace Johnson (81-73 – 154, +14) tied for 145th.
Stanford (281-267 – 548, -12) will start third-round action with a four-stroke lead on Alabama (274-278 – 552, -8). The remainder of the top eight after two rounds includes Oklahoma State (277-279 – 556, -4), LSU (279-278 – 557, -3), Georgia Tech (277-282 – 559, -1), SMU (275-285 – 560, E), Oklahoma (273-287 – 560, E) and UCLA (279-284 – 563, +3).
Cameron Wilson of Stanford (71-63 – 134, -6) is the individual leader after 36 holes, one shot ahead of teammate Patrick Rodgers (67-68 – 135, -5).
