Cal at Aggie Invitational Saturday-Sunday

Golden Bears playing at event for first time ever and looking for seventh win in 10 tournaments this season.

Cal (No. T2 Golf World/Nike Golf, No. 3 Golfstat, No. 4 Golfweek/Sagarin) resumes its 2013-14 season after a nearly three-week break by playing for the first time at the Aggie Invitational hosted by Texas A&M this Saturday-Sunday, April 5-6. Now in its eighth rendition in 2014, the two-day, 54-hole event will be played at the par-72, 7,146-yard Traditions Club in Bryan, Texas. Each of the 12 teams in the field will play 36 holes on Saturday and 18 on Sunday, with tee times from the first and 10th holes starting each day at 7:30 am CDT/5:30 am PDT. Each club will field five players with the top four scores each day counting towards the team’s total.

  • Winners – Cal has won six of its first nine events in 2013-14 and 24 of its last 35 stroke-play tournaments overall dating back to the beginning of 2011-12. The Bears have finished in the top five in 34 of those events as well as another four additional match-play events during the period. Cal had a string of 33 consecutive top-five finishes in stroke-play tournaments and 37 overall snapped with an eighth-place showing at the Southern Highlands Collegiate Masters.
  • Next Win – Another Cal victory this season would give the Bears seven victories in 2013-14 and the second-most wins in school history behind the record 12 won by the 2012-13 squad.
  • National Honors Candidates – Joël Stalter and Brandon Hagy are both candidates for National Player of the Year honors, ranking No. 5 and No. 6, respectively, on the latest Haskins Award Watch List released April 4. Stalter and Hagy and Michael Weaver are all on The Ben Hogan Award Watch List and among 15 nominees for the Byron Nelson Award.
  • Weather – The weather forecast for the Aggie Invitational calls for high temperatures in the low 60’s and low temperatures in the low 50’s, with winds up around 10 miles per hour from the northeast each day of the event. Saturday’s forecast also includes a 50% chance of rain in the form of afternoon showers, while Sunday calls for a 60% chance of rain and thundershowers.
  • Top Teams in Tournament Field – According to the lastest Golfweek rankings, the 12-team field at the Aggie Invitational includes three teams ranked in the top 10 national in No. 2 Oklahoma State, No. 4 Cal and the tournament’s host No. 10 Texas A&M, and an additional five top-50 squads in No. 25 Arkansas, No. 26 LSU, No. 31 Kent State, No. 38 San Diego State and No. 42 Texas Tech). The remainder of the field includes Michigan, New Mexico State, North Texas and Pacific.

1 – Joël Stalter (5-7, 155, Sr., 3L, Amneville, France/INDP HS)


  • Has been individual medalist three times in 2013-14, all over his last six events, and been in the top two four times and the top five on five of those occasions, with his three wins at the Alister MacKenzie Invitational, National Invitational Tournament and Arizona Intercollegiate crown (shared title with teammate Brandon Hagy)
  • Won Pac-12 Men’s Golfer of the Month honors in February of 2014 for the second time in his career after posting a 69.80 stroke average over his first five rounds of the spring
  • Has been an individual medalist a team-high five times in his career, adding wins in 2012-13 at the Arizona Intercollegiate (shared with Michael Kim) and John A. Burns Intercollegiate to his three victories this season
  • On watch lists for the Haskins Award (No. 5) and Ben Hogan Award, as well as a Byron Nelson Award nominee and the No. 2 player for Team Europe in the latest Palmer Cup Ranking

2 – Brandon Hagy (5-11, 170, Sr., 3L, Westlake Village, CA/Westlake HS)

  • Has finished in the top five in nine of his last 11 events and the top 10 in all but one of his last 11 tournaments
  • Has been an individual medalist twice in 2013-14 (Jack Nicklaus Invitational, Arizona Intercollegiate) and three times in his career, also winning  the Alister MacKenzie Invitational in 2012-13
  • Listed at No. 6 on both the latest versions of the watch list for the Haskins Award Watch List and Palmer Cup Ranking (Team USA), while he is also on the Ben Hogan Award watch list and a nominee for the Byron Nelson Award
  • Cal’s only player to have played in all nine of the team’s events in 2013-14

3 – Keelan Kilpatrick (5-9, 165, So., 1L, Christchurch, New Zealand/St. Bede’s College)

  • Has been in the top 15 in each of his last three tournaments, including the top finish of his career when he tied for eighth at the John A. Burns Intercollegiate and was Cal’s top finisher
  • In the lineup for the fourth consecutive tournament after having played only once previously since the spring of 2012, redshirting in 2012-13 and participating only at the Alister MacKenzie Invitational in the fall of 2013

4 – James Yoon (6-0, 180, So., 1L, Bradenton, FL/IMG Academy)

  • In the lineup for the second straight event and third time in 2013-14 with previous showings of a tied for 17th place finish at both the Arizona Intercollegiate and National Invitational Tournament
  • Played in five spring events during the 2012-13 season, registering a 73.19 stroke average and a top finish of tied for seventh at the Western Intercollegiate as he earned Cal’s Freshman of the Year honor

5 – Michael Weaver (5-9, 175, Sr., 3L, Fresno, CA/Clovis West HS)

  • Has three top-10 finishes and been tied for 17th or better in seven of nine events in 2013-14
  • On the Ben Hogan Award watch list and also a nominee for the Byron Nelson Trophy
  • The only Cal golfer to ever play at the Masters while currently on the collegiate team and only the second golfer in the history of the sport to play in the Masters, Palmer Cup, U.S. Open and Walker Cup in the same calendar year in 2013

Ind. Shotaro Ban (5-10, 155, So., 1L, San Jose, CA/Archbishop Misty HS)

  • Playing for the second consecutive event as an individual, coming off a tied for 43rd place showing at the National Invitational Tournament in the team’s most recent outing
  • Participated in the team’s first three events of 2013-14 and registered a 72.44 stroke average, finishing a career-high sixth (Jack Nicklaus Invitational), tied for 12th (Saint Mary’s Invitational) and tied for 27th (Gopher Invitational)
