Three Named to Ben Hogan Award Watch List

Michael Weaver, Brandon Hagy and JoŽl Stalter are among 30 collegiate golfers up for prestigious honor.

FORTH WORTH, Tex. – Cal seniors and tri-team captains Brandon Hagy, Joël Stalter and Michael Weaver are among 30 men’s collegiate golfers named to the 2014 Ben Hogan Award Watch List released Wednesday by the Colonial Country Club, The Friends of Golf (FOG) and the Golf Coaches Association of America.

The award is presented annually to the top men’s NCAA Division I, II or III, NAIA of NJCAA college golfer taking into account all collegiate and amateur competitions during the past 12-month period.

A list of 10 semifinalists, which could include individuals not on the current list, will be unveiled on Wednesday, April 16. On Wednesday, May 7, that group will be paired down to three finalists. The winner will be crowned at a black-tie banquet at Colonial Country Club on Sunday, May 18, prior to the start of the PGA TOUR’s Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial.

Hagy and Weaver were both on the watch list for last year’s award along with former Cal teammates Max Homa and Michael Kim to give the Golden Bears a record-tying four. Kim would end up Cal’s first finalist. Stalter is on the watch list for the first time.

► Hagy co-leads the Cal along with Stalter in 2012-13 with two individual medalist honors and has finished among the top 10 in each of his last eight collegiate events, including all six in 2013-14. In his most recent collegiate outing he shared individual medalist honors with Stalter at the Arizona Intercollegiate to begin Cal’s spring season. Hagy is third in the nation with a 69.83 scoring average.
► In addition to sharing Arizona Intercollegiate individual medalist honors with Hagy, Stalter was victorious earlier this season at the Alister MacKenzie Invitational and has a 71.1 stroke average along with three top 10 finishes.
► Weaver has a pair of top-10 finishes this season with a second-place showing at the Saint Mary’s Invitational and a 10th-place finish at the Jack Nicklaus Invitational. Last season, he became the first Cal player to participate at  the Masters while still in college.
► Hagy, Stalter and Weaver are all on track to graduate from Cal’s prestigious Haas School of Business in May of 2014. Each member of the tour is also a collegiate All-American. Hagy and Stalter are also roommates.
► Cal has won four times in six stroke play events in 2013-14 and has won 22 of its last 34 stroke-play events overall while finishing in the top five in each. The Bears return to action February 19-21 at the John A. Burns Intercollegiate hosted by Hawaii at the Wailua Golf Course in Lihue on the Hawaiian island of Kaua’i.
