2014 Australian Masters of the Amateurs

MELBOURNE, Australia – Cal senior Brandon Hagy shot an even-par 72 on Wednesday to move up six spots into a tie for 10th place halfway through the 72-hole 2014 Australian Master of the Amateurs. The 72-hole event with a field of 54 players is being contested through Friday on the West Course of the Royal Melbourne Golf Club.

Hagy (72-73 – 145, +1) trails second-round leader Simon Viitakangas (70-70 – 140, -4) of Australia by five strokes and is the third American listed on the leader board behind second-place Cameron Wilson (72-69 – 141, -3) and Max Buckley (72-71 – 143, -1), who is tied for fourth.

Hagy had a wild front nine Wednesday that included an eagle on the par-five fourth hole and a birdie on the par-five second, as well as four bogeys on the par-four first and nine holes, and the par-three fifth and seventh. On the back nine, he had a birdie on the par-three 13th and bogeys on the par-five 12th and 15th.

Hagy begins third-round action Thursday at 9:10 a.m. local time (Wednesday, 2:10 p.m. PT) and will play in a threesome beginning on the first hole along with Australia’s Taylor MacDonald and Anthony Murdaca.

Hagy is playing in the event for the second consecutive season. He finished 20th in his debut in 2013.

The 2014 Australian Master of the Amateurs Green Jacket Champion will receive an exemption into the 2014 Brabazion Trophy UK, 2014 Amateur Championship UK, Porter Cup USA, The Players Amateur USA, The Dogwood Invitational USA and the Canadian Men’s Amateur Championship CAN.

Hagy and the remainder of the Cal team will resume its 2013-14 season when the Golden Bears open the 2014 spring portion of their schedule January 27-28 at the Arizona Intercollegiate. Cal won three of five events during the fall of 2013, while posting third and fourth-place finishes in its other two tournaments to give the Bears 21 victories over their last 33 stroke-play events since the beginning of the 2011-12 season and top-five finishes in all 33.
