2014 Australian Masters of the Amateurs

MELBOURNE, Australia – Cal senior Brandon Hagy is tied for 16th after shooting a one-over par 73 in the first round of action Tuesday at the 2014 Australian Master of the Amateurs. The 72-hole event with a field of 54 players is being contested through Friday on the West Course of the Royal Melbourne Golf Club.

The hometown Australian trio of Frazer Droop, James Gibellini and Simon Viitakangas lead Hagy by three shots after each fired opening rounds of two-under par 70.

Hagy had four birdies, three bogeys and a double bogey during his first 18 holes, getting to two-under par quickly with birdies on the par-four first and par-five fourth holes. He fell back to one over after a bogey on the par-three fifth and a double on the par-four 11th. Hagy got back into red figures one more time with birdies on the par-five 12th and 15th holes before back-to-back bogeys on the 17th and 18th gave him his final score.

Hagy begins second-round action Wednesday at 8:54 a.m. local time and will play in a threesome along with Kenta Konishi of Japan and Scott Vincent of Zimbabwe.

Hagy is playing in the event for the second consecutive season. He finished 20th in his debut in 2013.

The 2014 Australian Master of the Amateurs Green Jacket Champion will receive an exemption into the 2014 Brabazion Trophy UK, 2014 Amateur Championship UK, Porter Cup USA, The Players Amateur USA, The Dogwood Invitational USA and the Canadian Men’s Amateur Championship CAN.

Hagy and the remainder of the Cal team will resume its 2013-14 season when the Golden Bears open the 2014 spring portion of their schedule January 27-28 at the Arizona Intercollegiate. Cal won three of five events during the fall of 2013, while posting third and fourth-place finishes in its other two tournaments to give the Bears 21 victories over their last 33 stroke-play events since the beginning of the 2011-12 season and top-five finishes in all 33.
