SAN MARTIN, Calif. – Former Cal golfer Max Homa made his professional debut Thursday at the Frys.com Open in the first PGA TOUR event of the 2013-14 season. Homa is tied for 19th in the 132-player field after shooting an opening-round two-under par 69 at the par-71, 7,379-yard CordeValle Golf Club. Homa became Cal’s first NCAA individual medalist last season and also won the Pac-12 Championships title.

Homa started on the back nine and got to three-under par quickly with birdies on the par-five 12th, par-four 13th and par-five 15th holes. After six consecutive pars, he gave two strokes back with a bogey on both the par-four fourth and sixth holes. He got one stroke back with a birdie on the par-four eighth.

Charlie Wi, another former Golden Bear, is tied for fourth after carding a four-under par 67 over Thursday’s first 18 holes.

Wi played a bogey-free round with four birdies on the par-four first, 13th, 15th and par-four 17th holes.

The 72-hole tournament will continue through Sunday with Golf Channel providing live television coverage each of the next three days from 2-5 p.m. PT.
