Cal returns 11 players and four of five competitors at the NCAA Championship from its 2012-13 team that was considered by many as one of the finest in the history of college golf by winning 12 of 14 stroke-play tournaments to set a modern-era NCAA single-season record previously established with the 10 victories recorded by the 1985-86 Oklahoma State team. Cal was ranked No. 1 in the final 2012-13 team rankings by both Golfweek and Golfstat despite losing to Illinois in the match-play semifinals of the NCAA Championship.
The Bears are ranked second behind 2012-13 national champion Alabama in the 2013-14 Golf World/Nike Golf Division I Preseason College Coaches poll. Golfweek and Golfstat have yet to release 2013-14 polls.
Cal will have three players from its 2012-13 squad – Max Homa, Michael Kim and Michael Weaver – playing Sept. 7-8 at the prestigious Walker Cup. Kim and Weaver, both members of the 2013-14 team, will miss the team’s season-opener at the Gopher Invitational. Homa was a senior who completed his collegiate eligibility in 2012-13.
