BERKELEY -

In a total team effort, the No. 10 California softball team (33-8) used all 17 of its healthy players to shut out visiting Santa Clara (6-35) Wednesday at Levine-Fricke Field.

Every player except junior Ashley Decker, out with an injury, entered the lineup at some point during the seven innings to combine for five runs on six hits. The effort included three Cal pitchers, including freshman Taylor Lee, who entered the circle donning the Blue and Gold for the first time in her young career.

Lee faced seven batters in the final two innings, allowing one hit with two strikeouts and walking none. Freshman Nisa Ontiveros pitched innings four and five with stats identical to Lee’s. Sophomore Nikki Owens started the game, fanning one batter with four hits allowed in the first three innings.

Sophomore Cheyenne Cordes went 1-for-2 with two runs, scoring both after being hit by pitch twice in the game. Senior Jolene Henderson went 2-for-3 with one RBI and teammate Lindsey Ziegenhirt also earned an RBI for her bases-loaded walk.

Cal scored a run each at the bottom of the second and the third. D. Henderson drew a leadoff walk to start the bottom of the second, then advanced to second on a single by sister J. Henderson and third on a subsequent fielder’s choice by junior Victoria Jones that sent J. Henderson back to the dugout. She scored when a throw to third by the Bronco catcher went awry and hit her before bouncing into the outfield.

At the bottom of the third, Cordes was hit by a pitch before D. Henderson walked to force her to second. A double by J. Henderson drove her in.

Three runs came across at the bottom of the fourth starting with a walk by freshman Vanessa Alvarez. Cordes was hit by a pitch for the second time in the game and junior Britt Vonk singled to fill the bases before Ziegenhirt drew another walk to force Alvarez in. D. Henderson capped off her day with a two-RBI hit to bring Cordes and Vonk across.

Cal continues its four-game home stand on Friday in the series opener against Oregon State beginning at 3 p.m.
