OKLAHOMA CITY - After trailing for only the second time in the postseason and the first since the 3-2 loss to Arkansas in the Berkeley Regional, the No. 1-seeded California softball team exploded for three runs in the bottom of the sixth to dismantle LSU in the Golden Bears' first game of the Women's College World Series.

In the top of the second, LSU jumped to a 2-0 lead, which the Bears halved with a socre in the third. The Bears tied it at two all with a run in the fifth before scoring thrice in the sixth. LSU tacked on one more run in the seventh, but it was not enough.

Frani Echavarria was the offensive starter for Cal, driving in three runs on a single, a sac fly and a groundout. Jamia Reid scored twice, had two hits and one RBI. Jolene Henderson pitched the complete-game victory, allowing eight hits and fanning five.

Rachele Fico took the loss after she allowed two earned runs on five hits and four walks in 5.1 innings of play. Mack threw the final 0.2 innings, taking one earned run. LSU made two errors.

Top of the Second - LSU 2, Cal 0:

The Tigers opened the second with back-to-back hits and a walk, loading the bases for Morgan Russell, who put a two-run single through the right side.

Bottom of the Third - LSU 2, Cal 1:

Britt Vonk reached on a fielder's choice and went to second on a Valerie Arioto walk. Frani Echavarria singled through the right side, plating Vonk.

Bottom of the Fifth - LSU 2, Cal 2:

Jamia Reid singled to second and advanced to second when second baseman Allison Falcon launched a poor throw to first. Vonk laid down a textbook bunt, moving Reid to third. With one away and Valerie Arioto on second after a walk and steal, Echavarria sent her first sacrifice fly of the season sky high, plating Reid.

Bottom of the Sixth - Cal 4, LSU 2:

Victoria Jones singled up the middle and went to third when Cheyenne Cordes doubled off the left-field wall. Elia Reid stepped in to run for Jones and then scored when her sister Jamia Reid slapped it back to the pitcher. Vonk drove in Cordes from third with a single to right. Arioto took a shot to the thigh, loading the bases for Echavarria, who knocked in her second RBI of the game with a groundout to first.

Top of the Seventh - Cal 5, LSU 3:

Stepping in as a pinch hitter, Cassie Trosclair singled to short, went to second and third on groundouts and scored when Ashley Langoni doubled to left-center field.

Next Time on the Diamond:

The Bears take on Oklahoma in the winner's bracket with a 6 p.m. CT tilt on Friday evening. The Sooners beat South Florida 5-1 in the opening game of the WCWS. USF and LSU play Saturday in an elimination game.
