BERKELEY - No. 7 ASU (35-6, 9-3 Pac-12) hit four home runs en route to a 10-0 victory over Cal Sunday to complete a three-game sweep against the Golden Bears. Cal moves to 20-14 overall and 3-4 in Pac-12 play with the loss.
Arizona State's four long balls came in the first three innings, all solo shots off Cal starter Stephanie Trzcinski (5-5). Amber Freeman homered twice for the Sun Devils, over the left field fence in the first inning and right field in the third. Bethany Kemp and Alix Johnson were the other two Sun Devils to go yard, with Kemp cirlcing the bases in the second inning and Johnson in the third, both clearing the left field fence.
After Freeman’s second homer, Katie Sutherland-Finch came in to relieve Trzcinski and was able to prevent any further damage in the third, despite allowing the Sun Devils to load up the bases.
Freshman second baseman Kylie Reed was the bright spot for the Bears offensively, leading the team with two hits. Arizona State ace Dallas Escobedo (16-5) tossed all five-shutout innings, allowing just three hits and two walks while striking out ten.
The Sun Devils put the game away with a six-run rally in the top of the fifth inning, thanks to a string of hits (four singles and three doubles) one walk and two wild pitches off Sutherland-Finch and Cal lefthander Taylor Cotton.
With Arizona State's lead then set at 10-0, the Bears had one final shot in the bottom of the fifth, but Cal wasn’t able to produce, and the game was then decided by the run rule with Trzcinski taking the loss.
The Bears will stay in the Bay Area for five more games, starting with a midweek matchup in Moraga with a rematch vs. St. Mary’s on Wednesday at 3 p.m. Cal’s weekend slate will feature conference foe Arizona at home on Levine-Fricke Field.
