BERKELEY -- Cal starts its Pac-12 slate in hostile territory, heading to Stanford to open conference play against the No. 21/ 19 Cardinal down at The Farm. The familiar foes meet for the first time in 2014 on Friday at 5:30 p.m., followed by a doubleheader on Saturday set for noon and 2:30 p.m. Both of Saturday’s games will be televised live on the Pac-12 Networks with Jessica Mendoza and Krista Blunk on the call.

SCOUTING STANFORD
Stanford is coming off a 5-1 weekend at its own Louisville Slugger Classic tournament after picking up two wins apiece over BYU and Portland State, and a win over UC Davis. Stanford fell to North Dakota State 4-0 to suffer its sixth loss of the season, adding to losses from Baylor, LSU, Tennessee, South Florida and Central Connecticut State. Kylie Sorenson paces the Cardinal with a .400 batting average and 12 doubles, along with Kayla Bonstrom’s team-leading 25 RBI and .354 batting average. Stanford’s pitching staff combines for a 1.99 ERA with the majority of work coming from Madi Schreyer’s 16-4 record and 105 strikeouts. Schreyer is holding opponents to a .194 batting average.

LAST TIME OUT
Coming off a three-game losing streak, the Bears earned a much-needed boost of confidence with a 2-1 win over Ohio State in the home opener at Levine-Fricke Field. Breana Kostreba led the Bears to victory with her a two-RBI single, and Stephanie Trzcinski pitched three hitless innings before Nisa Ontiveros clinched the win.


WHO TO WATCH THIS WEEKEND
The Bears are batting .264 as a team, paced by Junior Cheyenne Cordes’s .396 batting average, three home runs and nine RBI and followed by junior Danielle Henderson’s .373 batting clip with a team-high seven homers and 16 RBI. Freshman Kylie Reed owns a .373 average with a team-leading 25 hits. Freshman Kylie Reed carries a six-game hit streak into the weekend and is batting .371 near the top of the lineup. Sophomore Nisa Ontiveros and freshman Katie Sutherland-Finch lead in game starts in the circle., carrying the team with a 3.14 and 3.82 ERA, respectively. Ontiveros has pitched the Bears to a bulk of their wins with her 7-4 record. On the rise lately is freshman Stephanie Trzcinski, who held the Buckeyes to three hitless innings and has seen action in four games since last weekend after being sidelined due to injury for a few weeks.

DUE UP
After being rained out for three games at the UC Riverside Mizuno Invitational, the Golden Bears added a doubleheader against Grand Canyon to the schedule. The teams will meet in Berkeley on Thursday, March 20 for games at 2 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. before Cal finishes its preseason tournament schedule at the Santa Clara Invitational beginning Friday, March 21.

HENDERSON CONTINUES CLIMB UP CAL RECORD CHARTS
With Danielle Henderson’s seventh home run of the season and 34th career home run, the junior third baseman has continued her climb up the Cal record charts. Henderson ranks fifth for career record home runs, behind 2013 Cal grad Lindsey Ziegenhirt’s 42 home runs. Veronica Nelson led the program to 55 homers between 2000-03 and is flanked by Valerie Arioto (54, 2008-12) and Haley Woods (48, 2003-08).
