Bears Hosts Buckeyes in Home Opener Wednesday
BERKELEY – The California Golden Bears (9-10) are back in Berkeley and ready to take on the Ohio State Buckeyes (9-11) in the home opener at Levine-Fricke Field. WHO TO WATCH WEDNESDAY
The Bears are batting .269 as a team, paced by Junior Cheyenne Cordes’s .396 batting average, three home runs and nine RBI, followed by junior Danielle Henderson’s .386 batting clip with a team-high seven homers and 16 RBI. Freshman Kylie Reed owns a .373 average with a team-leading 25 hits. Sophomore Nisa Ontiveros and freshman Katie Sutherland-Finch lead in game starts in the circle. Ontiveros owns a 3.24 ERA with a 6-4 record while holding opponents to a .295 batting average while Sutherland-Finch holds a 3.82 ERA with a 3-3 record while holding opponents to a .277 batting average. Ontiveros and Sutherland-Finch lead the team with a combined 98.2 innings pitched and 65 strikeouts.
LAST TIME OUT
The Bears went 2-3 against three opponents at the Jack in the Box Spring Fling in Honolulu, Hawaii, losing their last three games on the road to James Madison and Hawaii. James Madison handed Cal a pair of 3-0 shutout losses. Sophomore Nisa Ontiveros and freshman Katie Sutherland-Finch carried the Bears to their initial two game victories. Ontiveros led through the full seven against the Tigers and Sutherland-Finch fanned five batters en route to a 10-1 run-rule win over Hawaii last Wednesday.
SCOUTING THE BUCKEYES
The Ohio State Buckeyes enter Wednesday’s contest with a 9-11 record after most recently defeating Massachusetts in a 13-3 victory, contributing to three victories in the Red and Black Classic in Louisville, Kentucky. Three of Ohio State’s 11 losses have come as mercy-rule losses while the Buckeyes have also dealt three run-rule defeats to opponents. The Buckeyes are batting .265, led by Caitlin Conrad’s .368 average, including 21 hits, 12 RBI, and two home runs. Evelyn Carillo holds a .328 average with 20 hits, twelve RBI, and eight runs scored. Alex DiDomenico has made five starts with a 3-2 record and a 3.07 ERA with over 29 innings pitched, striking out 21 batters with a .250 opponent’s average.
After taking on Ohio State, the Golden Bears will return to the road and head to Stanford, California to play the Cardinal in a three-game series and mark the beginning of Pac-12 play. The series begins Friday at 5:30 p.m. and is followed by a doubleheader Saturday beginning at noon. Saturday’s doubleheader will be broadcast live on the Pac-12 Networks with Krista Blunk and Jessica Mendoza on the call.
