RIVERSIDE, Calif. -- After two rainy days in Southern California, the California Golden Bears finally took to the diamond at the UC Riverside Mizuno Invitational, dropping their only game 3-2 to Loyola Chicago in extra innings. The Bears drop to 7-7 after three of Cal's four games this weekend were canceled due to the rain.
Both of Cal’s runs came from solo homers at the top of the first and top of the fifth. As the first batter of the entire game, junior Cheyenne Cordes blasted a ball over center field, and senior Jordan Wallace followed with a leadoff homer four innings later. Cordes finished 2-for-3 with a walk while Wallace went 1-for-3 with the Bears’ only hits of the day. Senior Victoria Jones tallied three walks, junior Danielle Henderson had two and junior Breana Kostreba walked once.
Loyola Chicago racked up nine hits in its eventual victory, scoring first with an illegal pitch at the bottom of the first that allowed Brie Pasquale to come home.
The Ramblers added another run at the bottom of the second on a solo homer by Alyssa Mannucci.
The teams entered the top of the sixth tied 2-2 and the score remained through the seventh, forcing the game into extra innings. With the international tiebreaker rule in play, Cordes started the eighth inning on second base and quickly moved over to third on a leadoff sacrifice bunt from freshman Kylie Reed. Both Henderson and jones walked to load the bases before a pop out and ground out ended the inning and left the trio stranded.
The Ramblers’Erica Nagelstarted on second for Loyola Chicago, who handed the Bears a swift defeat when Mannucci tabbed a leadoff walk-off double to drive Nagel home.
Sophomore Nisa Ontiveros (5-3) took the loss, pitching the complete game and allowing nine hits, two earned runs and four walks while striking out eight. Brittany Gardner allowed three hits and seven walks with four strikeouts in her eight-frame job in the circle.
The Bears take their bats to Hawaii next for five games at the Jack in the Box Spring Fling in Honolulu beginning Wednesday at 8 p.m. PT vs. Hawaii.
