CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. -- Cal finished strong at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic with a 5-2 win over No. 25 Texas Sunday morning to go 2-2 on the weekend. The Golden Bears add the victory to a 5-3 triumph over No. 24 Notre Dame while dropping games to No. 12/16 Texas A&M (10-6) and No. 15 Baylor (13-0), and are now 7-6 on the season.

The Bears roared out of the gates with a quick two runs from sophomore Jasmin Mejia. The inning started with a walk from junior Cheyenne Cordes and a single by freshman Kylie Reed before junior Breana Kostreba was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Mejia dropped a two-RBI single into right field to score both Cordes and Reed.

Texas capitalized on three fielding errors in its half of the first inning to catch up to Cal's 2-0 lead. Starting pitcher Tiarra Davis hit a single to left field as two of the three Longhorn runners on went home on the misplayed ball.

The Bears stayed hot into the top of the third, when Mejia used a second single to right field to get on base. Senior Jordan Wallace stepped up to the plate and homered to left field and the Bears gained a 4-2 lead.

The momentum continued into the top of the fourth with a solo blast from Cordes to the left.

Despite the slow start on defense, the Bears handled the ball well to end the game on the 5-2 note, and sophomore Nisa Ontiveros (5-2) earned her fifth win of the season in the circle for her second complete-game performance of the weekend. Ontiveros struck out two while allowing only one walk with eight hits.

Davis (1-5) was charged the loss for allowing three walks, five hits and five runs while whiffing two through four innings. Gabby Smith pitched the remainder of the game, allowing one hit and one walk on top of one strikeout. The Bears will take the field for their first midweek match 4 p.m. Wednesday at Pacific, then once again venture south for the Mizuno Invitational in Riverside beginning with Loyola Chicago on Friday at 9 a.m.
