Arioto, Ziegenhirt Help Team USA Triumph
OKLAHOMA CITY – Making their 2013 red, white and blue debuts, Golden Bear softball stars Valerie Arioto and Lindsey Ziegenhirt helped lift Team USA to a 7-0, run-rule rout over Canada Thursday evening in the opening game at the General Tire World Cup of Softball at ASA Hall of Fame Stadium in Oklahoma City.
Team USA veteran Arioto, now in her third year with the Eagles, sparked the offense with a two-RBI single in the first inning to drive home Florida’s Michelle Moultrie and Tennessee’s Lauren Gibson. Arioto finished 1-for-3 on the day, entering the game as designated player before putting in time at first base.
Ziegenhirt made her first ever Team USA debut at the bottom of the fifth as catcher. She drew a walk in her lone appearance at the plate before scoring on a single by Texas’ Taylor Hoagland during the sixth inning.
The U.S. National Team will continue World Cup of Softball play Friday against Australia at 5 p.m. PT, live on ESPN.
