EUGENE, Ore. – The California Golden Bears track & field team is in action in the 2014 NCAA Division I Men’s and Women’s Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Eugene, Ore. beginning on Wednesday, June 11. The Bears will be represented by six student-athletes and the men’s 4x100-meter relay team across eight events at historic Hayward Field; junior Kelsey Santisteban, senior Milan Ristic, redshirt senior Hammed Suleman, redshirt sophomore Jonte Grant, redshirt senior Derek White and sophomore Thomas Joyce.
One member of the Golden Bears will be competing in multiple events at the NCAA Outdoor Championshisps; Santisteban, who will be competing in the 5000-meters and 10000-meters.
Santisteban qualified two weeks ago in Fayetteville, Ark. in the 5000-meters with a seventh place finish and time of 16:10.60 and qualified third in the 10000-meters with a time of 34:19.59. Her season-best time in the 5k of 15:52.94 was set at the Payton Jordan Invitational on May 4 at Stanford, and was just over two seconds shy of her PR. Her best time in the 10k of 33:31.85 set at the Stanford Invitational placed her third on Cal’s All-Time Performers List. The 10k will be run on Thursday night at 7:15 p.m. PT, while the 5k race is on Saturday at approximately 3:24 p.m. PT.
Ristic, a transfer from UNC Asheville set a new PR in the 110-meter hurdles in Fayetteville, clocking a time of 13.63, which qualified him seventh. His season-best performance was when he ran a wind-aided time of 13.59, set earlier this season at the Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays on March 29. His preliminary race is scheduled for Thursday at 5:05 p.m. PT, while the final is slated to run on Saturday at approximately 3:12 p.m. PT.
Suleman, who claimed the Pac-12 Championship for the second consecutive year last weekend in the long jump, qualified in the same event for the NCAA Championships with a leap of 25-0.00 in Fayetteville. His best mark this season came at the Big Meet on April 12, when he posted a mark of 25-0.50. The event is slated to be held on Thursday afternoon at 4:30 p.m. PT.
Grant, a Hayward, Calif. native, leapt a PR distance of 51-7.25 in the triple jump to qualify 10th. That surpassed his previous best of 51-3.00, which was set at the Mt. Sac Relays earlier this year. Grant is slated to compete at approximately 12:30 p.m. PT on Saturday afternoon.
White, a San Jose native, qualified 12th in the discus with a throw of 185-5 two weeks ago at the West Prelims in Fayetteville. His season-best throw of 194-11 ranks eighth on Cal’s All-Time Performers List, which was set at the Big Meet on April 12 in Berkeley. White will be competing on Friday afternoon at 4 p.m. PT.
Joyce, a Moraga, Calif. native, finished fourth overall two weeks ago in Fayetteville to secure an automatic qualifying spot for the NCAA Championships with a time of 3:41.28, which was a new PR and also ranks him sixth on Cal’s All-Time Performers List. The prelims for the 1500-meters are scheduled to be run on Thursday afternoon at 4:30 p.m. PT, while the final is slated for 2:18 p.m. PT on Saturday.
The men’s 4x100-meter relay team comprised of redshirt junior Dan Davis, redshirt seniors Tom Blocker, Dash Oliver and freshman Khalfani Muhammad equaled their season-best time of 39.91 to seize the 12th and final qualification spot in Fayetteville to earn their way to Eugene. Their mark of 39.91 was also set earlier this season in the prelims at the Pac-12 Championships in Pullman, Wash., and it is the best time that Cal has produced since 1987, ranking seventh on Cal’s All-Time Performers List. The prelims are scheduled to begin on Wednesday afternoon at 4 p.m. PT, while the final is set for 2:03 p.m. PT on Saturday.
