BERKELEY –Eight members of the California Golden Bears track & field team were in action at the 56th Annual Mt. Sac Relays at Hilmer Lodge Stadium in Walnut, Calif. on Friday. Sophomore Jonte Grant set a new PR in the triple jump with a leap of 51-3.00 for the Bears, placing third in the open event. On the track, three Bears competed in the 100-meters, as redshirt seniors Tom Blocker (wind-aided 10.34) and Dash Oliver (wind-aided 10.53) both ran times that would have been new PR’s, were it not for the wind, while freshman Khalfani Muhammad (10.55) set a legal PR on Friday.
“We had a number of good marks today including a couple of PR's in a long day of competition,” Director of track & field Tony Sandoval said on Friday night. "Jonte’s triple jump was impressive as he jumped into the wind. Also, Tom except for a slightly wind-aided mark in the 100, had his best college 100-200 double. His 200 was a legit PR and he is ready for a sub 21.0 200-meters soon. Scott has also had three consistent weekends in a row with another 200-plus hammer.”
In the hammer competition, redshirt junior Scott Esparza placed sixth with a throw of 205-1, which equaled his second best effort this season. Cal also had participants in the high jump, as senior Nick Ridge and sophomore Noel Frazier each cleared a height of 6-10.25. Additionally, redshirt senior Derek White competed in the discus, posting a mark of 183-0.
“Dash and Khalfani are running very well right now, with both recording season bests and Dash's 100 although slightly wind-aided would have been a PR for him,” Sandoval added. “Tomorrow we're looking to break 40.00, as It has been since the (Atlee) Mahorn days since we have had a sub-40 4x100.” Cal will have seven student-athletes in action at the Mt. Sac Relays in Walnut, Calif. on Saturday, as Oliver, Blocker, Muhammad and redshirt junior Dan Davis will be running in the men’s 4x100-meter relay, while redshirt seniors Hammed Suleman and Malaina Payton are set to compete in the invitational section of the men’s and women’s long jump and sophomore Randy Bermea is scheduled to run the 400-meter hurdles.
