BERKELEY – The California Golden Bears track & field team is hosting the 120th edition of the Big Meet at Edwards Stadium on Saturday, as they take on Stanford in the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) National Meet of the Week. The Bears’ men’s team currently ranks second in Track & Field News dual meet rankings with a 5-0 mark, and could potentially climb to the top of the poll with a win on Saturday. They are also ranked 23rd nationally by the USTFCCA, looking to defeat the Cardinal men for the second consecutive season, following their 85-78 win last year. Cal’s women’s team will be searching for their first win in the meet since 2010, and should California earn the sweep, it would be the first time since the 2000 season.

Redshirt senior Tom Blocker looks to defend his titles in the 100-meters and 200-meters, while Hammed Suleman is trying to do the same with his long jump and triple jump wins a year ago. Redshirt junior Jordan Locklear was arguably the biggest surprise at the 2013 Big Meet, winning the 800-meters with a PR of 1:50.08 to win the event. Fellow redshirt junior Scott Esparaza will be defending his hammer title, after winning last year with a mark of 193-11.

On the women’s side, redshirt senior Malaina Payton will be defending her long jump title, after setting her legal PR of 21-1.50 last season. Thrower Shelby Ashe will also be looking to repeat in the hammer, after her throw of 201-10, which placed her at No. 3 on Cal’s all-time performer list. Senior Charnell Price, like Blocker, will be defending her title in both the 100-meters and 200-meters.

Fans are encouraged to get to Berkeley early, as the Big Meet coincides with Cal Day on campus, and parking will at a premium. Fans unable to attend the meet can follow along with live results here.
