BERKELEY – The California Golden Bears track & field team open their 2014 outdoor campaign on Saturday in the California Outdoor Opener at Edwards Stadium in Berkeley at 9 a.m. PT. In recent years, Cal has started the outdoor season with an opening event either in Berkeley or at Stanford. This year's meet is at home and will include competitors from Cal, UC Davis and the University of San Francisco in a scoring tri-meet, where dual meet scores will be available. Other local universities are expected to have competitors on hand as well. Expect a number of newcomers to make their Golden Bear debuts, with many veterans getting their first opportunity to prove themselves outdoors after the indoor season.
The field events are set to begin at 9 a.m., starting with the women’s hammer throw, carrying on through the men’s discus at 2:45 p.m. Additionally, the running events will begin at 12:30 p.m. with the women’s 2k Steeplechase, and the day’s final event will be the men’s 4x400 meter relay at 4:20 p.m.
Following this week, Cal will be represented by three competitors at the NCAA Indoor Championships in Albuquerque, N.M. at the Albuquerque Convention Center on March 14-15.
