BERKELEY – The California Golden Bears track & field team heads to Seattle on Friday and Saturday for the MPSF Indoor Championships at Dempsey Indoor Facility, the Bears' final opportunity to secure invitations to the NCAA meet two weeks from now.
The MPSF Championships have proved traditionally fruitful for Cal - a total of 14 current school indoor records have been set at the conference meet. Last year, the Cal men finished third, while the women were eighth. Cal’s men have now placed inside the top three at the MPSF Championships in four out of the last six seasons. The Bears posted an incredible 16 top-five finishers last season in Seattle.
The first event on tap this weekend is the women's weight throw that gets underway Friday at 12 p.m. Competition runs through the men's distance medley relay at 7:25 p.m., then resumes Saturday morning at 10:30 a.m. The final event is the men's 4x400m relay set to go off at 2:40 p.m.
The Bears return to action after a record-setting weekend for junior Chioma Amaechi, who set a new school-record in the weight throw with a mark of 71-4.25 and redshirt senior Tom Blocker, who set a new school record in Albuquerque in the 60-meter dash with a time of 6.74. 45 Golden Bears are expected to be in action this weekend at Dempsey.
Following this week, Cal will be opening their 2014 outdoor season at Edwards Stadium in Berkeley on Saturday, March 8. After that will be the NCAA Indoor Championships in Albuquerque, N.M. at the Albuquerque Convention Center on March 14-15.
