SEATTLE/ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The California Golden Bears were in split squad action on Friday at the Husky Indoor Classic at the University of Washington’s Dempsey Indoor Facility in Seattle and at the Don Kirby Elite Invitational in Albuquerque, N.M. Junior Chioma Amaechi shattered her own school record in the weight throw in Seattle with a mark of 71-4.25 (21.75m), and captured the event title. In addition, several other Bears set or matched personal bests in various events at the Don Kirby. Redshirt senior Tom Blocker set an indoor PR in the 200-meters (21.64) and junior Milan Ristic tied his own indoor PR in the same event (21.48). On the women’s side, Senior Charnell Price set a new indoor PR on the 200-meters (24.29) and sophomore Grace Beaudoin achieved her indoor personal-best in the high jump that cleared 5-8.00 (J1.73m).

“Chioma broke the school record tonight with an outstanding mark of 71-4.25,” said Director of track & field Tony Sandoval on Friday night. “That winning mark was spectacular, but her whole series were PR's with two 70-foot throws as well. She demonstrated poise and resolve in spite of the emotional week with the passing of Ted Agu. Her mark currently stands 5th in the NCAA, but we know anything can happen at NCAAs!”

Amaechi, a San Francisco native, broke her own school record in the weight throw on Friday, surpassing her previous mark of 67-2.00 (20.47m) set at Dempsey on Jan. 26 of 2012.
Beaudoin set a new PR in Albuquerque on Friday and finished tied for ninth, breaking her previous mark last year at the Stanford Invitational in Palo Alto (5-7.25).

Ristic, a junior from Belgrade, Serbia, tied his own indoor personal best with a mark of 21.48 in the 200, finishing 12th and Blocker had a big day as well, finishing 18th with his new PR mark of 21.64. Both will be back in action tomorrow at the Albuquerque Convention Center, with Blocker set to compete in the 60-meters, and Ristic in the 60-meter hurdles.

“Tomorrow is big for Tom Blocker, Khalfani Muhammad and Charnell in the 60-meters as well as Milan in the hurdles,” Sandoval added. “Hammed Suleman and Jonte Grant are also looking for a big jump in the triple jump.”

The Golden Bears are back in action on Saturday at both the Husky Indoor Classic back in Seattle and the Don Kirby Elite Indoor Invitational in Albuquerque, N.M.
