BERKELEY – This marks the last weekend of competition before the MPSF Championships get underway later this month for the Cal track & field team, who will send competitors to two separate meets in an effort to improve their marks and seedings. One group will travel to the Don Kirby Elite Invitational in Albuquerque, N.M., on Friday and Saturday, with the rest of the squad flying to Seattle for the Husky Classic Friday and Saturday.

A squad of ten will be heading to Albuquerque for the Don Kirby Elite Invitational. Senior Nick Ridge (high jump) and redshirt senior Hammed Suleman (long jump and triple jump) highlight the men’s side for the Bears, while fellow redshirt senior Malaina Payton (long jump) and Grace Beaudoin (high jump) will be competing for the Cal women. Suleman returns to the track in Albuquerque, following his victory in the long jump (25-3.25) earlier this season at the Cherry & Silver Invitational on Jan. 24, while Payton finished third in the women’s event, with a mark of 20-5.25.

Cal will also send 31 student-athletes to Seattle for the Husky Classic on Friday and Saturday. Junior Chioma Amaechi is set to compete in both the shot put and weight throw, after finishing third with a mark of 63-4.00 in the weight throw two weeks ago at the UW Invitational. Sophomore Victoria Rische posted a PR in Seattle two weeks ago, and figures to improve on her third place finish with a mark of 12-11.75 on pole vault. Fellow sophomore Grace Beaudoin is set to compete in the high jump, and set a personal best two weeks ago at the UW Invitational in the women’s high jump. On the men’s side, Sophomore Randy Bermea looks to continue to build off of his solid start to the indoor campaign, is slated to compete in the 400-meters, alongside teammates juniors Joost de Jong and Jonte Turner.

Fans can stay up to date on the Husky Classic and Don Kirby Elite Invitational with live stats.

Following this week, Cal will not be competing until the MPSF Championships at the University of Washington on Feb. 28-March 1.
