BERKELEY – The California Golden Bears track & field team returns to action this weekend in Seattle at the University of Washington Invitational at the Dempsey Indoor facility on Friday and Saturday. Cal looks to build off of a successful season-opening meet in Albuquerque last weekend and will be in Seattle for the first of three indoor meets this season. The Bears’ focus this week will be on field events, after having a broader emphasis in the opener that saw two event wins and several Golden Bears set or matched PR’s.
The 2013 UW Invitational saw Chioma Amaechi, then a sophomore, set a new school record in the weight throw, and captured the title in shot put. Amaechi is expected to compete in both events again this weekend. Fellow junior Jaci Powell is set to compete in the women’s pentathlon on Friday afternoon, an event she participated in last year at the same meet, becoming the first Golden Bear to do so since the 2008 season. Sophomore Victoria Rische and freshman Emma McCarthy are expected to compete in the women’s pole vault, while sophomores Grace Beaudoin and Tara Lookabaugh are set to participate in the women’s high jump.
On the men’s side, only three Golden Bears are expected to participate, as sophomore Noel Frazier and senior Nick Ridge will be in the men’s high jump and redshirt sophomore Isaac Dan is expected in the field for the men’s weight throw.
The UW Invitational includes a two-day multi-event competition, with the majority of action on Friday in the men's heptathlon and women's pentathlon. The meet resumes at 9 a.m. Saturday morning at the Dempsey Indoor facility.
Following this week, Cal will not be competing until the Don Kirby Invitational in Albuquerque, N.M., and the Husky Classic in Seattle, both on Feb. 14-15. The MPSF Championships will also be at the University of Washington on Feb. 28-March 1.
