BERKELEY – The California Golden Bears track and field team opens their 2014 indoor season at the University of New Mexico Cherry & Silver Collegiate Invitational on Friday and Saturday in Albuquerque.
The Bears will look to repeat some of their success from last season’s meet that saw them win six events. Two of the three Bears that swept the men’s triple jump in 2013 are back in redshirt senior Hammed Suleman (second place) and redshirt sophomore Jonte Grant (third place). Other returning event-winners are redshirt junior Chioma Amaechi (women’s weight throw), redshirt senior Derek White (men’s weight throw) and sophomore Randy Bermea (men’s 400 meter hurdles).
There will be more familiar faces suiting up for the Blue and Gold, as men’s high jumpers sophomore Noel Frazier and senior Nick Ridge are expected to compete, as are redshirt senior Malaina Payton (long jump) and junior Jacqueline Powell (long jump, shot put, 60 meter hurdles and 800 meters).
In addition, several fresh faces are slated to make their Cal debuts, including freshman running back Khalfani Muhammad, who will be trading in his football cleats for spikes, and is expected to participate in the 60 meters and 200 meters this weekend. Other student-athletes expected to make their debuts are UNC-Asheville transfer Milan Ristic (men’s 60 meter hurdles and 200 meters), Utrecht University transfer Joost de Jong (men’s 400 and 600 meters), freshmen Ivan Gonzales and Josh Lewis (men’s 600 and 800 meters), freshman Matt Esparza (men’s weight throw), freshman Marsalis Gibson (men’s 60 meter hurdles and 200 meters), freshman Nijae Jones (women’s 600 and 800 meters), freshman Khala Taylor (women’s 200 meter and 400 meter), redshirt freshman Xochitl Navarette (women’s 800 meters), freshman Emma McCarthy (women’s pole vault) and Megan Bordes (women’s mile).
