Entering his ninth season at Cal in 2016 and third as Associate Director, Mike Gibson oversees the Golden Bears in the sprints, hurdles and relays in addition to his work as the program's recruiting coordinator.

Among Gibson's pupils have been Kimyon Broom, the school-record-holder in the 100-meter hurdles and 60-meter hurdles and a two-time Pac-10 champion. He also coached the women's 4x100 relay to fourth of the top sixtimes in school history the last two years, including an eighth-place finish at the 2008 NCAA meet and a berth in the 2010 championships. 

Additionally, he has coached Ray Stewart, the 60-meter hurdle school-record holder, Indoor All-American and two-time Pac-12 Champion, Milan Ristic, who was an Indoor All-American in the 60-meter hurdles and is the co-Serbian national record holder, Tom Blocker who set the school record in the 60-meters, Brook Turner, who set the indoor 400-meter school record, as well as 
Monte Corley 2011 a Junior Pan Am Games 400h Champion. as well as 32 individuals and relay teams ranked in the Cal All Time top 10. The 2013 men also ran their first sub-40 second relay team since 1987.

Gipson came to Cal after spending eight years at Sacramento State, where he coached the Hornets' sprints, hurdles, relays and horizontal jumps, while also serving as recruiting coordinator. More than 30 of the athletes/relays Gipson has coached still stand in the school's all-time top five marks. He also had over 50 All-Big Sky Conference selections.

Gipson previously spent 15 years as track & field head coach and assistant football coach at his alma mater, Highlands High School, in Sacramento. The Scots captured two Sac-Joaquin Section titles and were twice section runner-up over his final three seasons.

In his coaching career, Gibson has coached champions and nationally-ranked athletes at the youth/age-group, high school, collegiate, U.S .national, foreign national, masters and senior levels.

Among notable Gipson-coached athletes are Brian Lewis, a 1995 Olympic Festival and World University Games medalist, as well as a member of the 1997 and 1999 World Championships relays. Lewis was also a member of the gold-medal U.S. 4x100-meter relay at the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney. In addition, Gipson coached Yvonne Kanazawa-Scott, who set the Japanese record for the 100 hurdles and was a semifinalist for the event at the 2000 Olympics. Eugene Swift, the sixth-place finisher in the 110 hurdles at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta and the 1997 Pan Am Games champion, also spent time under Gipson's guidance.

Gibson holds U.S. Track & Field Level 1 coaching certification, was the assistant director of operations for the 2000 U.S. Olympic Trials and assistant director of events for the 2003 NCAA Outdoor Championships.

Gipson sat on the Big Sky Conference Committee for the development of women's track & field. He also has been a speaker at the Northern California All-Sports clinics.

A graduate of Highlands High School, Gipson initially attended the U.S. Air Force Academy. He earned bachelor's degree in business administration with a concentration in marketing from Sacramento State in 1983. 

Gipson and his wife, Brenda, have two children, Kristara, a 2013 Cal Graduate, and Karlaina a who previously competed on the UC Davis track team.
