Montaņo Earns 800m Final Berth
MOSCOW - Alysia Montaño won her semifinal heat in the women’s 800 meters at the World Championships Friday in 1:58.92 and now advances to Sunday’s final where she will attempt to become the first U.S. runner ever to medal in the race.
As is her forte, Montaño raced to the front, completing the first of two laps in 56.33. She then held off the field and is in the final for second time. She placed fourth at the world meet in 2011 with a time of 1:57.48. Last summer, Montaño took fifth in the Olympics when she crossed the line in 1:57.93.
On Sunday, Montaño will be joined by fellow American Brenda Martinez, who was second in heat one in 1:59.03, and Ajee Wilson, who took third in heat two (2:00.90). Others who will run Sunday include a pair of runners from the host country – defending Olympic and world champion Mariya Savinova and 2012 Olympic bronze-medalist Ekaterina Poistogova.
