Four members of the Cal track & field team – Chioma Amaechi, Sydney Gray, Torie Owers and Victoria Rische – have earned selection to the coaches’ association All-Academic squad.
To qualify for the team, which is sponsored by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association, student-athletes much have at least a 3.25 GPA and finished the year either ranked in the top 96 in an individual event during the indoor season or have participated in the NCAA Championships during the outdoor campaign.
Amaechi, a sophomore from San Francisco, set a school record in the indoor weight throw with a mark of 67-2 and led the Bears in both the shot put (52-3.75) and discus (153-10) outdoors. She also threw the hammer 178-4 during the spring. Amaechi owns a 3.39 GPA as a double major in African American studies and political science.
Gray, a sophomore who has a 3.49 GPA as an undeclared major, paced Cal in the 1500 meters with a best of 4:26.83 and qualified for the NCAA West Regional meet in the event.
Owers (3.92 GPA) and Rische (3.64 GPA) both completed their freshman seasons this spring. Owers had a best of 52-10.25 in the indoor shot put and topped out at 181-4 in the hammer, while Rische led the team in the pole vault with a PR of 12-11.00 from the indoor campaign.
